Dustin Wong & Takako Minekawa, Good Willsmith

When: Sat., Nov. 8, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $10
During his time with playful Baltimore art-punk collective Ponytail—and even more so now that he’s gone solo—Dustin Wong has seemed intent on transforming his guitar into the musical equivalent of a Lite-Brite. He often relies on stacks of buoyant, looped guitar parts for his creative, colorful sound, enthusiastically manipulating a semicircle of pedals to fit his Technicolor riffs snugly together like puzzle pieces. The new Savage Imagination (Thrill Jockey) is his second collaboration with like-minded Japanese singer-composer Takako Minekawa, who broke a 13-year discographical dry spell to write 2013’s Toropical Circle with Wong. Her keen ability to tease out weirdness from synths makes Savage Imagination quirkier and more diverse than Wong’s solo output. It incorporates keyboards, samplers, and other doodads—the opener, “Pale Tone Wifi,” begins with a race countdown from the vintage Nintendo game R.C. Pro-Am—and Minekawa’s ethereal vocals intensify the fantasy-land atmosphere, blowing in and out of the songs like dandelion seeds. —Kevin Warwick
