Dumber than a Dog

To the editors:

Reading your article "Jaws" [November 1] on an otherwise peaceful Saturday afternoon, I found myself becoming more and more angry.

"Michael," whoever you are, if your ego and sense of what it means to be a man are so fragile and misdeveloped that you are willing to cause the injury and possible death of a dog so that you can feel "tougher" and "more of a man" and because you "love the sport," then you are truly one pathetic, misguided, and sadistic motherfucker!

You say the dogs "love" to fight. Bullshit! The dogs fight out of an instinct for survival, to dominate the other dog, and because they have been trained and bred to do so by cretins like you. Let's be clear about this: you love to see the dogs fight; you create the arena where dogs fight so you and your fellow dogfighters can get your kicks and maybe make a few bucks; you get the vicarious thrill of a vicious, brutal fight without risk to yourself, beyond the financial loss of a dog who has no "heart," something you so obviously lack.

Your incredibly callous, inhumane attitude towards these creatures is truly horrifying. What the hell gives you the right to create their suffering? You seem unaware that the dogs are living, breathing creatures like you and me, not just "dumb fuckin' dogs" as you so coldly put it.

Your argument that since boxing is OK, therefore dogfighting is OK too, is dubious at best. No one forces a boxer into the ring to fight another. It's his choice to participate in an equally barbarous endeavor. A dog tossed into a ring with a mean, bloodthirsty pit bull does not really have a choice--you made it for him.

A psychologist might opine that you are getting in touch with your Warrior Self, some dark primeval corner of your psyche that, left unchecked, might gouge out another man's eyes were he to bump into you on the street. But I say fuck that. There's no rationalizing that this is a "sport." It's just a sick business run by sick people, plain and simple.

What is odd is that you don't seem like some brainless punk. You actually seem reasonably intelligent; you have a wife, kid, respectable job--so you can't be totally unredeemable. What is mystifying is why you would put so much energy and time into this "sport." One is left only to conclude that you are a man with too much time on his hands and no real clue of how to meaningfully spend it.
