Duets for My Valentine

Though the romantic duet might seem a confining form, there are probably as many different possibilities as there are couples in love and stages of love. Anna Simone Levin's new Magnetic--one of 18 duets on impresario Bob Barrett's fourth annual program celebrating Valentine's Day--depicts the sudden, irresistible attraction between two strangers shocked by their own willingness to throw inhibition to the winds. Set to winding, soulful acid jazz by the German group Mo' Horizons, Magnetic is marked by halfhearted attempts to create distance alternating with full-blooded pursuits and collisions; dancers Levin and Peter Sciscioli convey well a quality of movement that's not completely volitional, collapsing or flinging themselves into astonishingly precipitate intimacy. Also on the program are Joffrey Ballet of Chicago dancers in Deanne Brown's At Last and Davis Robertson's Duas, Tyego Dance Project in The Owl and the Pussy Cat, Melissa Thodos & Dancers in How the Planets Were Placed, Luna Negra Dance Theatre in a piece set to 50s Latin club music, the Chicago Swing 1/2 Breeds in a new swing dance, TangoDanza in an Argentine tango, the Cerqua Rivera Art Experience in Beyond the Sea and Save the Last Dance, Peter Sciscioli's Glance, Sarita Smith Childs's Two Overcomes..., Nadia Oussenka's duet for a singer and dancer interpreting a Schubert song, Jim Morrow's Raw, Lucy Vurusic-Riner's Stuck on You, LeAnne Vancil's Inverse, Sarah Ford's Simply Beautiful, and M.K. Victorson's tale of love in the supermarket, Ruby Red Easy. Athenaeum Theatre, 2936 N. Southport, 312-902-1500, 773-935-6860 for rates on groups of 20 or more. Through February 11: Saturday, 8 PM; Sunday, 3 PM. $20.
