Duane Hopwood

Hangdog David Schwimmer plays the title character, an alcoholic floor manager in an Atlantic City casino who gets busted for driving drunk with his daughter asleep in the backseat; when his grim ex-wife (Janeane Garofalo) finds out, she moves to revoke his visitation rights. Written and directed by Matt Mulhern, this downbeat indie drama (2005) gives the leads a few excellent scenes together, and they acquit themselves credibly. But there's also a fair amount of wilted comedy from the stock supporting characters, among them an aspiring lounge comic (Judah Friedlander) and a not-so-funny old gay couple (Dick Cavett and Bill Buell). With Steve Schirripa. R, 85 min.
