Elegant, unabashedly theatrical, and packed with lush concert scenes and period-perfect costumes, this musical by Bill Condon (Kinsey) is remarkably faithful to director-choreographer Michael Bennett's Broadway hit about a black girl group of the 60s and 70s. It's a soapy showbiz saga of heartbreak and triumph that also chronicles the turbulent era when black music (and the aspirations it expressed) crossed over to the cultural mainstream. Beyonce Knowles, Jennifer Hudson, and Anika Noni Rose are the Supremes-like trio; Jamie Foxx is their controlling, unscrupulous producer; Keith Robinson is the songwriter who rebels against selling out; and Eddie Murphy, in a solid performance, is an old-fashioned R & B (“rough and black”) star who can't make the transition to a smoother style. PG-13, 130 min.
