A voyeur who tries to drown himself is persuaded to try pills instead by one of his objects, a reckless guy whose apparently heartless fascination with suicide turns out to be motivated by something deeper than a need to complement his tattoos and leather jacket with a morbid personality. The confrontations between lonely drone Terry (David Arquette) and his edgy savior, Nick (Brad Hunt), and Nick's attempts to reunite with his estranged father make this 1996 male-bonding drama a harangue on how ironic it is that men often attack one another verbally and physically as a way to get close. A montage sequence during which the friends trip at an amusement park lets them be a little funny and generous to each other and breaches the dullness that results from writer-director Finn Taylor's assumption that melodramatic events define characters.
