Drake Bros. Steak House | Gold Coast/Mag Mile/Streeterville | American, Steaks/Lobster | Restaurant
The Drake Hotel's pricey steak house with a fabulous view of the lake.

Our Review

From the L-shaped dining room with majestic views of Michigan Avenue and the lake to the pleasing heft of the silverware, everything at Drake Bros. Steak House feels big--it's a place for large appetites and bulging money clips. The menu features, among other things, fist-size jumbo shrimp, giant slabs of prime beef, Montana lamb chops, and small mountains of side vegetables. For the most part the food lives up to the grandiosity. Escargots and a duck breast appetizer were sublime, as were an heirloom tomato and mozzarella salad and a flavorful lobster bisque. The steak au poivre, expertly cooked, with a full, round, peppery taste, was sensational -- my companion said it was the finest piece of meat he had ever eaten. The 16-ounce dry-aged New York sirloin, an imposing side of beef, was cooked just right -- a bloody ruby red -- but suffered from an excess of charcoal, which imparted a bitter, gritty finish to almost every bite. The creamed spinach and sauteed shiitake sides were tasty in a routine way -- it's really about the steak here. Two caveats: You may want to bring a defibrillator to counteract the heart palpitations brought on by the final tab, and the restroom is two hallways and an entire lobby away.
