Dr. Harlon's Keys to Better Living

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 13 2009

Dr. Harlon is a third-tier self-help mountebank and the amiably flimsy hook on which Will Clinger hangs this solo hour of comedy sketches. Harlon's five keys provide a subheading for each phase of the production. "Nurture Your Self-Esteem," for instance, leads to a bit about an old showbiz agent and the big acts he used to represent (including a guy who could take a hunk of brisket and masticate it into a portrait of Ethel Merman). "Value Your Legacy" yields a piece about a salesman who annoys his fellow Red Line passengers with talk about his rotten life. Clinger has a nice wit that leans gently to the cornball; quiet little twists are a specialty. But his conceits--a lounge entertainer with anger issues, a guy using tone-deaf pickup lines at a bar--are too familiar to generate more than mild interest. --Tony Adler
