Didactic plays often fail because their authors become so obsessed with proving a point they neglect the things that pull us into theater. John Patrick Shanley is too clever to fall into that trap. Yes, his 2005 drama explores an important issue—the abuse of children by priests—but it does so through a dramatic, suspense-filled conflict between an old-school nun and a hip young priest. Likewise, in reviving Doubt (in a church, no less) director William Brown focuses on plot and character, packing this Writers Theatre production with actors who know in their bones how to bring Shanley’s powerful story to life. All of the performances are great, but Karen Janes Wodisch is astonishing as the decidedly pre-Vatican II Sister Aloysius Beauvier. —Jack Helbig
