Formed less than two years ago, this local quintet has rapidly ascended to become the city’s most exciting, forward-looking cumbia outfit—not that there’s a lot of competition. Still, its debut album, Dos Santos (Sonorama), is a propulsive blast of hard-core cumbia, Peruvian chicha, and Mexican son topped off by a guitar-heavy modern take. And on a grander scale, that same mix makes Dos Santos: Anti-Beat Orquesta one of the most entertaining and high-energy neo-roots Latino outfits in the country. In it Singer Alex Chavez, who doubles on organ, coats the reedy licks and swelling chords of Tex-Mex over the galloping cumbia grooves sketched out by drummer Daniel Villareal-Carrilo, hand percussionist Peter “Maestro” Vale, and bassist Jaime Garza. The band’s greatest weapon, though, is guitarist Irekani Ferreyra, who uses twangy instrumental surf, flanged-out funk, and early Santana-style psychedelia to push the band’s pan-Latino repertoire beyond the folkloric. It seems only a matter of time before the combo becomes a key player on the country’s world-music circuit. —Peter Margasak
