Less stage-bound than most dance films, this loose adaptation of the Cervantes novel was directed by Rudolf Nureyev, who modeled his choreography on Marius Petipa's legendary Bolshoi Ballet production nearly a century earlier, and Robert Helpmann, whose Australian Ballet performs the piece. Nureyev stars as Basilio, the buoyant, comical village barber who woos the coquettish Kitri (Lucette Aldous), while Helpmann mimes the surprisingly minor part of Quixote. Sumptuously photographed by Geoffrey Unsworth (2001: A Space Odyssey), this 1972 film provides a valuable record of its 34-year-old star's graceful athleticism and fabled talent for vividly establishing character through movement. 103 min.
