A troubled, fatherless grade school boy (Nathan Gamble) helps rescue a beached female dolphin, christened Winter by the veterinary team that amputates its infected tail and rehabilitates it at the marine hospital in Clearwater, Florida. After the boy's cousin returns home from war injured and requiring a leg brace, the boy persuades a doctor at the local VA hospital (Morgan Freeman) to design a prosthetic tail for Winter. The parallel between the dolphin and the disabled tourists who flock to see it borders on treacle, but Gamble's rapport with his finned costar is so touching that the movie works anyway. Charles Martin Smith (
Air Bud) directed this family film; with Ashley Judd, Harry Connick, Jr., and Kris Kristofferson.
