Only two cuts from DJ Shadow's paradigm-shifting Endtroducing . . . . . turn up on the recent Reconstructed: The Best of DJ Shadow (Universal Music Enterprises). The album emphasizes the more songlike vocal-driven constructions that have dominated the three studio albums he's made since that 1996 debut: meticulously assembled tracks that feel closer to pop, soul, or rock than to hip-hop. But for Shadow the hip-hop aesthetic has always been much bigger than rap, and the way he builds his acoustic-soul tunes ("I've Been Trying") and rock songs (the previously unissued "Listen," with vocals by British soul-rock veteran Terry Reid) has more in common with classic hip-hop than most current rap production does—his raw material has always been a kaleidoscopic array of samples from rare records. Reconstruction demonstrates his dazzling craft and ear for detail, though much of the later stuff sounds relatively conventional compared to his cinematic early work, which played a huge part in introducing trip-hop and instrumental hip-hop to the larger world. He'll be playing material from all stages of his career, but I wouldn't expect him to leave any of the tracks untouched. —Peter Margasak DJ Intel, Zebo, and Moppy open.
