During the last years of World War II, a childless couple in an occupied Czechoslovakian town provide a hiding place for a fugitive Jew, even though a gestapo rat keeps dropping by for dinner. This alternately tense and ironic 2000 black comedy by populist director Jan Hrebejk explores how ordinary citizens react during extraordinary times—with dignity, self-interest, or a mixture of both. It was the first Czech film after the cold war to deal head-on with the country's Nazi past, which may explain its deliberate construction, and it's a good example of the Czech cinema that tackles political issues in an entertaining fashion. In Czech and German with subtitles.
