Re: “Chicago Reader: Letters to the Editor

Get Mad, Chicago!

I am deeply disturbed by the commentary by Inspector General Faisal Khan published in yesterday's Tribune this week.

I knew the inspector general's hands were tied, but I was not aware of how tightly. I was shocked to read that there are NO whistle blower protections written into the process involved in reporting potential illegal activities of city council members, the extreme difficulty involved in filing complaints and the lack of cooperation from the city council.

I understand that the city council does not want to be open to frivolous and unfounded allegations and complaints, but it should be within the purview of the inspector general to determine whether or not a complaint has merit.

Another disturbing aspect of this is Ald. Carrie Austin's statement: "Ain't nobody going to tell me what to do." I think she needs to be reminded that she is a public servant and that there are many people (her constituents) who should be able to tell her what to do. And let's not forget about Patrick O'Connor. He's the Rahmfather's city council floor leader, who, while he's being investigated by the Board of Ethics for violating the city's rules on soliciting campaign contributions, managed to ram through even more limitations on the inspector general!

Our elected officials should be concerned about the perception exuded by the city council and the "reform" mayor through the limitations placed on the inspector general. The question smart voters are asking now is "What are they afraid of?"

Some of the progressive city council members need to form a committee to push for fewer restrictions on the inspector general's office, protection for whistle blowers and a more open investigation process. Also, the "prominent" alderman who threatened Inspector General Khan should be "outed" and censured.

We'll be waiting and watching!
