So a gay guy and a straight guy rent a vacation cottage in England. They've been friends since they were kids. One recently lost a longtime partner, and the other, the straight one, is stuck in a loveless marriage to an insufferable Mormon. Anyway, they get to the place, and the gay guy yelps, "It's Howards End!" The audience laughs, and so does his allegedly straight friend, and you know immediately where Martin Casella's new play is going. And so it does, taking a route littered with awkward, unrealistic dialogue. In this production from Pride Films and Plays, those obstacles prove insurmountable for director David Zak's talented, eye-pleasing leads. The touching, powerful ending is the only exception. Maybe Casella should have started there. —Keith Griffith
