Wes "Diplo" Pentz made his name in the hipster club scene in the early aughts—right around the time there started to be such a thing as a hipster club scene—by introducing us to M.I.A. and advocating for obscure forms of dance music like Brazilian baile funk (and by extension the phenomenon of "global bass culture"). The success of M.I.A.'s 2008 single "Paper Planes," which he produced, proved that Pentz could balance his taste for jubilantly weird noises with a pop sensibility broad enough for the mass market. And he's since become the go-to guy for pop singers and rappers (Beyonce, Usher, Wale, Chris Brown) who hope his eccentric magic will rub off on them. In his work outside the pop realm he promotes, replicates, and blends the most joyfully raunchy dance music microgenres the world has to offer, including dancehall, moombahton, bounce, bubbling, and a bunch of styles that don't even have names yet but that pop music will probably sound like in a couple years. His recent EP Express Yourself (on his own Mad Decent label) is 25 solid minutes of loopy aural hedonism. —Miles Raymer Laidback Luke opens.
