Diarrhea Planet, Lovely Bad Things, Shiloh

When: Sat., Nov. 16, 9:30 p.m. 2013

When this Nashville six-piece named themselves Diarrhea Planet, it became inevitable that music writers would spend more time complaining about the band’s shitty name than enjoying their rip-roaring rock tunes. Some coverage of the group’s recent sophomore album, I’m Rich Beyond Your Wildest Dreams (Infinity Cat), even tried to make it seem as though their juvenile name were somehow an affront to the art of rock ’n’ roll, which is ridiculous—these dudes sound like graduates of the Angus Young School for Boys, and it’s easy to imagine them playing “Big Balls” or “Let Me Put My Love Into You” (though maybe not wearing schoolboy uniforms). Guitar solos clearly inspired by AC/DC provide the meat of “Hammer of the Gods,” mingle with waves of fuzzy riffs on “Babyhead,” and feed into a gargantuan wall of noise on “The Sound of My Ceiling Fan.” Occasionally the band quiets down for a serene melody (“Kids”), but those moments are like the slow climb a roller coaster makes before plunging from its highest peak—a brief pause in the boisterous, freewheeling rocking, so that it can hit you out of nowhere all over again. —Leor Galil The Lovely Bad Things and Shiloh open.
