The cliches fly like bullets in this noirish 2002 fairy tale directed by Hong Kong visual stylist Siu Hung (Billy) Chung. Daniel Wu plays a gentle scar-faced hit man who, in partnership with his chubby brother, kills for a sadistic gang lord. The boss's mistress (Gigi Lai) sets the brothers up to be killed, but life-saving cosmetic surgery enables Wu to pull through and go back to work with vengeance in his heart, posing as a handsome bodyguard to Lai. The characterizations are broad, the dialogue sparse and unintentionally funny, the atmosphere sleazy and sweaty. With Stephen Fung as the boyish cop on the chase. In Cantonese with subtitles. 86 min.
