Los Angeles native John Webster Johns has moonlighted as a touring guitarist for White Fence, palled around with Ariel Pink, and performed his own music under a long list of aliases. His first album as Jack Name, Light Show (God? Records), is half peculiar lo-fi psych-pop tweaked with bits of early Alice Cooper, half ruminations from another dimension that aren’t so much structured songs as they are synth-loaded soundscapes with freaky vocals processed till they’re twisted and shrunken. It’s discombobulating, and that’s probably the point. The best and most straightforward track, “Do the Shadow,” is catchy and pogo worthy, but the songs that sound like songs cluster in the album’s first half—once you get past “Pure Terror,” which a commenter at Stereogum has likened to Rocky Horror’s “Science Fiction-Double Feature,” Jack Name heads for the spaceship. Be ready to get strange. —Kevin Warwick Dent May headlines; Jack Name and Thin Hymns open.
