Re: “Canady le Chocolatier

Canady has incredible gelato. The pistachio and mascarpone are two of my favorites. The texture is Italy-legit and the flavors are vibrant. I have been here a number of times and enjoyed the gelato each visit.

Let me start by saying that I really wanted to like this place. For the price, the service was unacceptable. The night started with me having to get my own menu. Later, our waitress delivered our appetizers to the table. 3 of the 4 should have been delivered to another table, although she removed all 4. When my friends received their correct orders, she forgot to bring mine. I thought it was on its way. 10 minutes passed without the food or our waitress. By the time it was straightened out, my friends were close to finishing their appetizers. Waitress had to ask which entree belonged to who when the main course came out. For $25 a plate, it is too much to ask that you remember who ordered what?

Re: “Gene & Georgetti

G&G has somewhat of a legendary status among Chicago steakhouses. After my dining experience last night, I have to wonder why. We were seated upstairs and had an unintelligible and inattentive waiter who, when able to communicate with us at all, gave inconsistent answers to questions about the food. For example, we were told that we did not have to order mashed potatoes because they came with the steaks. When the steaks arrived with fries, we asked about the mashed potatoes and were told that we did not order them. Huh? The steaks were not cooked as we had ordered them, but could not find our waiter to let him know of the problem. The prices are just as high as Gibson's and Morton's, but the quality and experience is completely inferior. I think G&G stays packed with tourist traffic, suggesting that G&G is coasting on its old reputation. If you are from Chicago, there are at least a dozen other steak houses which deserve your business before G&G.

Re: “Pane Caldo

No hype, just great food. We broke the bank on the vegetarian tasting menu and it was worth every penny. A highlight was the suave Gold Coaster who was trying to impress his girl by speaking Italian to the waiter. He tried (unsuccessfully) to speak the language for over 5 minutes when the waiter had to stop him and saisd, "Sorry, I'm French." That was entertaining. The wine list is tremendous. The staff is not hesitant to say that a particular bottle sucks. I'm going back for lunch. This place is a real gem.

Re: “Cafe Dolce

The place is partially decorated with paintings of movie posters staring Italian actors. Inexplicably, the Bobby D poster is Analyze This complete with an oil reproduction of Billy Crystal. The unfunniest man in the world looming over my dinner plate may have sent the night into fiasco status if not for the great food and service. I'm vegetarian and found 2 or 3 pasta choices and the day's risotto. I would have gladly eaten any of them. My entree was fusilli with sun dried tomatoes and portabella mushrooms. Seriously, it was a gem that I would consider on my second visit. At the end of the dinner, the management started setting up DJ equipment as some Gold Coast honeys made their way insode. I doidn't stick around for Club Big Night, but would consider it. All in all, a nice surprise and a solid value.
