When a mother in Burkina Faso tries to find the man who raped her 16-year-old daughter, the culprit takes advantage of their village's mounting hysteria over the unexplained deaths of several children to accuse the mother of witchcraft and force her to flee to the countryside. Director S. Pierre Yameogo puts his previous experience as a documentarian to effective use, especially during a harrowing sequence in which the daughter searches for her mother in decrepit and overcrowded women's shelters. The subject matter of this 2005 feature invites comparison to Ousmane Sembene's Moolaadé, and though this never attains the grace of Sembene's film, it's an eye-opening indictment of patriarchy and superstition. In French with subtitles. 89 min.
