I don't know if there's been a more reliable, soulful bluegrass band in the past 20 years than the one led by singer and guitarist Del McCoury, whose beginnings in the genre go back five decades to when he worked with Bill Monroe. Through all of that time, McCoury's been a purist without getting stuck in the past—he's updated his repertoire with contemporary tunes from the likes of Tom Petty and Richard Thompson and collaborated with an array of artists (Steve Earle, Donna the Buffalo, Phish). He did stumble earlier this year, though, when his excellent band teamed with New Orleans trad institution the Preservation Hall Jazz Band for American Legacies. Though eminently well-played and surprisingly fluid, the album is a boring traipse through early jazz and country standards by two very different bands who accomplish little together but underlining the two genres' common roots. Luckily, McCoury and his band are on their own tonight, and it's always easy to recommend that. —Peter Margasak Robbie Fulks & Nora O'Connor open.
