Artistic director Kevin Iega Jeff and co-artistic director Gary Abbott have come up with a second part to Move!, premiered just over a year ago, and will preview Move!--Movement Two at the company's first engagement at the Dance Center of Columbia College. A piece that celebrates the vitality of movement, it runs the gamut from African-inflected boogying numbers to a small, pumping, angular, devilishly quick solo to a pointedly cool, sexy duet to a character turn by a nutty, seductive, eye-rolling female partygoer. Alternately tough, tender, loud, and withdrawn, it journeys through varieties of movement, seemingly determined to cover the full range. The Dance We Dance, sections of which are also on the program, is a journey motivated by theme. This 1998 piece--made up of works dating as far back as 1972 by several choreographers--begins with "an ancestral elder passing the legacy of life to a child of the new world," moves through the Middle Passage slave trade and its consequences, and closes with three sections about the role played by the church (good or bad) and spirituality in a soul's evolution. Ultimately life-affirming and transcendent rather than bitter, The Dance We Dance reflects the company's generally upbeat philosophy. (As Jeff told the dancers during rehearsal, trying to get them to find "comfort in the movement," they'd be fine if they'd just "give it to the earth.") Dance Center of Columbia College, 1306 S. Michigan, 312-344-8300. Opens Thursday, October 18, 8 PM. Through October 20: Friday-Saturday, 8 PM. $25.
