This presentation will recover the circumstances of the extensive renovations to the interior of the Second Presbyterian Church of Chicago that took place in 1901. What was once a space in the Victorian Gothic tradition was reconstructed in an entirely different manner by architect Howard Van Doren Shaw (1869-1926) and artist Frederic Clay Bartlett (1873-1953). The dramatic change that took place invites further investigation into the broader artistic, social and cultural conditions of the era.
