You can’t blame these Polish death-metal legends for packing it in for a while after the 2007 car accident that killed drummer Witold “Vitek” Kieltyka and injured vocalist Adrian “Covan” Kowanek so severely that he still hasn’t fully recovered. Today the sole remaining original member is Vitek’s brother, guitarist Waclaw “Vogg” Kieltyka (who was 16 when he cofounded the band in 1996), so it’s unfair to expect this version of Decapitated to pick up exactly where the previous one left off, with the mid-00s masterpiece Nihility and the weirdly psychedelic Organic Hallucinosis (the only album with Covan on vocals). The band reemerged with 2011’s Carnival Is Forever, and this fall’s Blood Mantra (Nuclear Blast) builds on that foundation with a new rhythm section—drummer Michal Lysejko is fluid and powerful, and the album emphasizes chugging grooves and heavy riffing, with the occasional delightful boiling solo rising up out of the unsettling tempo changes. I hope this lineup lasts long enough to grow into its strengths. —Monica Kendrick
