When: Fri., Sept. 5, 10 p.m. 2014
It took local electronic-pop producer David Beltran, aka Starfoxxx, almost two years to put together his new debut full-length, Baby I’m Off the Drugs and I’m Ready to Marry You (Donky Pitch). He started working on it while living at a South Loop DIY venue called FeelTrip, which shares its name with the collective of musicians and visual artists to which he belongs, as well as with the record label he cofounded to release their material. The FeelTrip space was shut down, though, and Beltran ended up bouncing from apartment to apartment in Chicago, keeping his album alive but also taking up other creative pursuits—drawing designs for T-shirts and calendars, for instance, and giving stick-and-poke tattoos. He told me that making Baby I’m Off the Drugs was his way of decompressing from his untethered life, and its glossy, nocturnal tracks are as soothing as an isolation tank—even when they’re clearly designed to get people on their feet. The deconstructed house beat on “Bae HD” lights the way to the nearest dance floor, while the swirling, dilated vocal samples build in intensity like a ritual trance. Tonight’s set is part of the eighth installment of Soft Leather, presented by FeelTrip, Teen Witch Fan Club, and Johnny Love’s Opaque Project; the monthly event describes itself as a “pansexual dress-to-sweat party.” —Leor Galil
