To the editors:

I feel compelled to point out a glaring factual error in the Reader's usually accurate reporting ("Reel Life," May 26, 1995). Referring to the outlaw group Jane's coordination of illegal abortions in the early 70s, video maker Kate Kirtz claims that more than 12,000 abortions were performed--and to her wonder--with "not one fatality." Sadly, her astonishment is a case of willful delusion: since these abortions were presumably successful, Jane's work resulted in more than 12,000 fatalities. Perhaps Ms. Kirtz will explore this ugly truth in her next documentary.
