After Pennsylvania physician Andrew Bagby was found murdered in November 2001, Shirley Turner—his ex-girlfriend and the prime suspect in the case—fled to her native Newfoundland, where she gave birth to Bagby's son, Zachary, and fought extradition to the U.S. For several months she and Bagby's parents tensely shared custody, but when the legal situation began to shift against Turner in August 2003, she killed the baby and herself. This shocking story and the questions it raises about Canadian jurisprudence (Turner was free on bail) are more than enough to propel this video documentary by Kurt Kuenne, a lifelong friend of Bagby. No one should confuse it with balanced journalism, though: Turner is presented as a satanic figure, and people who denied Kuenne interviews are turned into Monty Python cartoons, their photographs animated to make their lips move as their words are read in voice-over. 95 min.
