Dean Wareham

When: Fri., April 11, 7 p.m. 2014
Price: $28, $26 for members
On his new self-titled album, his full-length debut under his own name, Dean Wareham doesn’t tinker much with the familiar sound he’s been purveying since 1987—first with Galaxie 500, then with Luna, and now (to a lesser extent) with Dean & Britta, his band with bassist and wife Britta Phillips. The strummy, sleepy songs are pleasantly melodic, and his frail, nasal voice floats through simple arrangements of guitar, organ, and lean drumming; the post-Velvet Underground guitar solos prevalent in his older projects are mostly missing, but Wareham drops a corker on the churning “Holding Pattern.” In its lyrics he’s preoccupied with getting older, musing on the difficulties of change and appreciating the things that hold steady—including Phillips. Wareham will play two concerts tonight, one solo and one with Dean & Britta; the latter will focus on the Galaxie 500 songbook. —Peter Margasak Advance Base opens.
