Dean Wareham has never bothered hiding his huge fanboy crush on the Velvet Underground. Countless artists have lifted the Velvets’ chilly hipster attitude and narcotized guitar jangle, as Wareham has for decades in bands like Galaxie 500 and Luna, but his infatuation goes much deeper than the music. Most recently Wareham and Britta Phillips, his wife and former Luna bandmate, have created a soundtrack for a selection of screen tests shot by Velvets patron Andy Warhol. On the forthcoming DVD 13 Most Beautiful . . . Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests (Plexifilm), they match a set of mellow psychedelic pop songs—both originals and covers by the likes of Dylan and, of course, the Velvets—to silent, black-and-white films of actors, musicians, and scenesters submitting to Warhol’s famously unorthodox audition methods. Shot in the mid-60s and each running about four minutes at the slightly slowed-down speed Warhol preferred, the 13 screen tests chosen for this project include footage of Dennis Hopper, Edie Sedgwick, Nico, and a surly-looking Lou Reed. The performance will involve a four-piece band and jumbo-size video projections. —Miles Raymer
