During their initial 19 years of existence, from 1987 to 2006, Portland’s Dead Moon ignited a slow burn of underground buzz with a personalized brand of sleazy and damaged garage rock. Fronted by husband-and-wife team Fred and Toody Cole (who more recently played together in Pierced Arrows) and backed by powerhouse bare-bones-style drummer Andrew Loomis, the band released ten studio full-lengths and countless singles comprising twisted rock standards and blown-out lo-fi garage originals played with cavemanlike intensity and acid-casualty abandon. Dead Moon only became more revered following their split, and last year’s hyped reunion stint produced the live LP Dead Moon, Live at Satyricon (Voodoo Doughnut). The raucous and rough document proves that even though these freaks are now in their 60s, they can still play with as much fury and rage as they did in their heyday. —Luca Cimarusti
