Agitprop meets Waiting for Godot in Raúl Dorantes's layered new play about two undocumented immigrants crossing paths at the U.S.-Mexico border. One is headed north, seeking the American Dream, the other is on his way back south having achieved and renounced it. Dorantes and director Ignacio Guevara broaden an otherwise straightforward political parable by borrowing philosophical angst and circular dialogue from the absurdists. Realistic scenes--all of which are presented in Spanish with English super titles--are punctuated with eerie, Beckettian video segments. The result can be disenchanting and thought-provoking--at least when the play is focused. Detours into needless or incomplete backstories stall the pace. Still, most of this Colectivo el Pozo production offers a sharp, distanced look at a hot-button issue. --Dan Jakes
