A vacuum cleaner salesman nearing retirement makes his rounds in an apartment building populated by eccentrics, most of them enmeshed in life crises (a widow grieves for her husband, a man confronts his inability to impregnate his wife). Writer-director Mikael Hafstrom alternately manages some poignant and modestly comic moments, but the crisscross editing among the multiple story lines never achieves a coherent rhythm. The salesman is meant to serve as an empathetic witness to the tenants' sorrows, but he mainly comes across as a walking plot contrivance, as do many of the ancillary characters. With Kjell Bergqvist and Carina Johansson (2001). In Swedish with subtitles. 96 min.
