Dawnbringer, Skull, Bible of the Devil, Oblong Box, Borrowed Time

When: Sat., July 14, 8 p.m. 2012
The Alehorn of Power fest probably won't ever feel entirely like its old self without Slough Feg, but this year the local talent on the bill goes a long way toward making it magical again. The Skull is a new band with two members of Chicago doom pioneers Trouble—original vocalist Eric Wagner and longtime bassist Ron Holzner, now of Earthen Grave—and guitarists Lothar Keller and Michael Carpenter of Sacred Dawn. It's not the long-hoped-for Trouble reunion (original drummer Jeff Olson bowed out last month, to be replaced by Brad Sabathne, formerly of Sacred Dawn), but it'll do for now, especially since these guys will be playing material from Trouble's classic mid-80s albums Psalm 9 and The Skull alongside new material. Headliners Dawnbringer, founded in 1995 by the ridiculously prolific Chris Black, were known for years as a band that never play live—this is their fourth show in 15 years, according to Reggie's—so don't miss them here. The new Into the Lair of the Sun God (Profound Lore) is a relentlessly chugging, mesmerizing epic-fantasy concept album about an assassin trying to kill a deity, and the story is so well served by the constant forward propulsion of the classic-metal riffs that you don't really even need to read the lyrics, which Profound Lore has helpfully posted on the label's blog—the pounding churn of the music turns the pages for you. —Monica Kendrick Dawnbringer headlines; the Skull, Bible of the Devil, Oblong Box, and Borrowed Time open. $15, $12 in advance.
