"Postmodern" is the word for choreographer David Roussève and his troupe, REALITY. His new evening-length Saudade juxtaposes shards of text, Portuguese fado music, and modern, west African, Indonesian, and east Indian dance to address the experiences of southern African-Americans and Portuguese maritime explorers, the African influence on fado, and the bittersweetness of that music. But the postmodern label implies something coldly academic, and Saudade is anything but. Rousséve has called the piece "childlike, goofy, and silly." Seated dancers form a train, for instance, and chug along the floor on their butts, each one yelling something different, creating a cheery Babel. And Rousséve pulls out all the emotional stops telling the stories of Katrina victims and of a slave girl whose sister taught her to write.
