Arts foundations have recently been hip to funding choreographers who tour the country, creating new dances with "community members." Often the community members are "artistically disadvantaged": kids from housing projects, old folks from senior-citizen centers, runaway teens. But New York choreographer David Dorfman decided to work with a segment of our society perhaps more artistically disadvantaged than any other: jocks. On the other hand, these muscle-bound men and women who think with their bodies and have no fear of movement may not be so different from professional dancers, as Dorfman illustrates in his exhilaratingly physical Out of Season: The Athletes Project, set on some 25 local athletes. But this onetime football player at Niles West High School does more than create dances for athletes--he's fluent in the soulful language of the body. Sleep Story ventures into the realm of memory, painfully examining how all elements of life can seem intertwined even in death. The Partial Truth is a harsh exploration of the pack mentality, delving into togetherness and isolation, manipulation and group control. In Horn, a duet that premiered at the Dance Center in 1991, two bare-chested men in kilts play the saxophone and move to their own music. It's a sensuous piece with beautiful juxtapositions of silent movement and noise; the dance ultimately becomes a metaphor for the tensions and joys of partnership. There will be two free previews of Out of Season, Tuesday at 12:15 in the auditorium of the Harold Washington Library, 400 S. State, and Wednesday at 6 at Nike Town, 669 N. Michigan, Regular performances are next Thursday through Saturday, February 24-26, at 8 at the Dance Center of Columbia College, 4730 N. Sheridan; $12-$15. Call 271-7928 for tickets and information.
