In 2010 saxophonist Dave Rempis released Cyrillic (482 Music), an intimate, open-ended duo recording with drummer Frank Rosaly that documented a working project dating back to 2004. Now Rempis has dropped Second Spring (Aerophonic), a charged duo with drummer Tim Daisy, another longtime collaborator—not only is this their second duo album, after 2005’s Back to the Circle, but they’ve also played together in units such as the Vandermark 5, Engines, and the Rempis Percussion Quartet, where Daisy and Rosaly mesh preternaturally into a single multifarious entity. Comparing Rempis and Daisy’s two duo records reveals the significant progress they’ve made in the intervening years, alone and together—they’ve got bigger vocabularies, more patience, and better-developed compositional mind-sets. The six improvised pieces on Second Spring flow with an inexorable propulsion, combining heady extended technique, sonic abstraction, and architectural logic. Guitarist Derek Bailey often discussed the way improvisers tend to resort to favorite tricks and licks when they play together often, but Rempis and Daisy demonstrate that such familiarity can be an asset too: their quicksilver reactions and practiced intuition allow them to make spontaneous music while seemingly anticipating each other’s next moves. —Peter Margasak Ken Vandermark opens with a solo set
