Re: “Rules Don't Apply

What an exciting write-up of a film I'd thought all critics had dumped in the ash heap of cinema history: Without reading any further than some terrible pans in the dailies and cool reception on NPR, the best I could think to hope for, still wanting to see it, was that Beatty was working with some kind of rumination on late-life dementia as played out through the lens of great wealth and power, which might account for the "mess" so many critics claimed this film to be. So glad to hear and think there's more here than met those lazy, dismissive eyes. Did NOT want to think our great Warren Beatty was out peddling a movie he'd lost control of in the making. Sounds like his work is masterful as ever. Thanks for the encouraging news. Can't wait to take a look. (My rating is for the review, not yet the film itself.)

Re: “The dividing line between the U.S. and Canada

So hard to Like, Mike....

Your column has been a guiding light - through the prism of "a civic gem" - for almost as long as I can remember. Which, unfortunately, is a time growing shorter almost quicker than whatever time I see ahead.

Thanks, ever. And hope to see you 'round the backward R some time(s).

Re: “New Algren bio slanders my poker table

This sounds like it could be rounded into a 'missing chapter' of Richard Brautigan's "Trout Fishing in America."

Re: “Roger Ailes accuser ‘Susan’ waited decades for someone to hear her out

Thanks for your usual and necessary square-on look at a sensationalized story, Mike.

Re: “Where Rauner sees threat, I see my family's refugee roots

Right on the money, Steve. Exactly what the French people were celebrating in the American character when they gifted us with that Statue we so proudly display to the world in New York harbor — at least on our patriotic holidays.

Great piece, as usual, Mike. Thanks for remembering his mom Irene.

Re: “Jon Stewart, fake news, and real trouble

Best, most deeply considered review of this film -- and its place in today's media circus -- that I've seen so far. Thanks, Jim, for holding it up a little closer to the light.
