This House Theatre production is a tweaked remount of its 2005 show--an extremely convoluted time-travel story about a scientist who works with his older self to rewrite mistakes and avert personal tragedies. House scripts almost always seem to have been lifted from some middle schooler's composition notebook, but in the past the company redeemed itself with clever stagecraft and an infectious, look-at-me energy. After a nearly unbroken string of box office successes, however, the group's productions have gotten ever slicker on the surface while staying hollow at the core. Dave DaVinci Saves the Universe certainly looks expensive, but there's not much to distinguish it from any other shallow crowd-pleaser. --Zac Thompson
