Manhattan filmmaker Bari Pearlman traveled to the remote Tibetan district of Nangchen to shoot this 2007 documentary about the Kala Rongo monastery, which has broken with centuries of patriarchal tradition by recruiting women to study Buddhism. Some of the nuns interviewed are illiterate, and none of them is very articulate, which severely limits the documentary's spiritual reach and compels Pearlman to punctuate the action with intertitles of perfunctory Buddhist epigrams. The movie is more valuable for its ethnography, with scenes of the women tending to the yak herds that help sustain the monastery. In Tibetan with subtitles. 68 min.
