The cover of Date PalmsThe Dusted Sessions (Thrill Jockey) depicts arid flatlands obscured by a rising dust storm; the artwork for the imminent Mind Over Mirrors album, When the Rest Are Up at Four (Immune), shows a forest reflected in a placid harbor. The music on the two records is likewise different. Date Palms are a variably configured combo from Oakland, California, anchored by Marielle Jakobsons and Gregg Kowalsky, who thread snaking, Carnatic-flavored violin melodies through languid analog keyboard grooves seasoned with pinches of tambura and pedal steel. Mind Over Mirrors, on the other hand, is the one-man band of harmonium player and electronicist Jaime Fennelly, who uses oscillators and effects to transform the output of his bellows-driven keyboard into expansive drones and vertiginous churns. But both acts induce a sun-baked, spaced-out alpha state that makes them perfect candidates to share a bill—and this show celebrates the release of their respective albums. Tonight Date Palms are a quartet with bassist Ben Bracken and guitarist Noah Phillips. —Bill Meyer Date Palms headline; Good Willsmith, Kwaidan, and Mind Over Mirrors open.
