Formed in 1991, the Dastan Ensemble establishes itself more firmly among Iran’s top classical groups with every passing year. This nonchalantly flexible quintet has worked with just about every great Iranian vocalist active today—from folk singers like Sima Bina to brilliant classical singers like Shahram Nazeri, Parissa, and Mohammed Reza Shajarian—in the process displaying complete mastery of the country’s rich panoply of musical traditions. Lately they’ve been collaborating with Shajarian’s son Homayoun—who made an auspicious Chicago debut in 2005, performing alongside his father on the Masters of Persian Music tour—and the results have been typically stellar. On last year’s Khorshid-e Arezoe (Delawaz) the empathy between the singer and the band is perfect, a refined balance of poetic incantation and improvisational fluidity. —Peter Margasak
