Re: “One North Kitchen and Bar

It comes as somewhat of a surprise that One North wasn't on the list of frequently rated restaurants. Nonetheless, this usually crowded eatery named after its location lives up to the urban midswestern stereotype of being casual, warm and elegant.

The commonsense naming of the restaurant reverberates though the refreshingly simple and elegant interior, reminding us of a Colorado ski-lodge, and contemporary American menu. The restaurant gets rather busy with business people at the lunch hour and pre-opera crowds, but the noise level isn't so distrating that it takes away from the dining experience.

One North's interior is uncomplicated and warm, which is nicely complemented with floor to ceiling windows to round out the upscale yet casual ambience. The food is varied yet consistently good, from the cheese tater tots, frito misto, tuna and salmon tartare, entree salads, braised beef and root vegetable pasta, steaks, excellent burgers through the list of tempting desserts. The portions are on the larger side, which encourages sharing, and the wine list is good. However, One North is one of those few places where one could be inclined to ignore all the gorgeous entrees and make a meal of all the side dishes. Personally, the green beans with the mac and cheese is my ideal comfort food.

This unpretentious and relaxed eatery takes one away from the hustle and bustle of the loop. It's an ideal place for business lunches, dinner with someone special, or a casual night out with friends. The waitstaff is attentive and knowledgeble. So stop saying that this is one of those places you've been waiting to try and make your reservation now (I wasn't kidding when I said that it gets crowded at the lunch hour).
