Crime drama, Drama, Suspense/Thriller
This 1950 noir is remembered for having introduced Charlton Heston, though he's repeatedly upstaged by 30-year-old Jack Webb as a feral punk. A cynical Chicago bookie (Heston) ropes in a traveling businessman (Don DeFore) for a late-night poker game. The bookie and his crooked crew (Webb, Ed Begley, Henry Morgan) relieve their sucker of a company check for five grand, but after he commits suicide they find themselves targeted by the police and stalked by the dead man's brother. This loses its way when a conscience-stricken Heston heads for Los Angeles and encounters the businessman's widow, though Webb is good for a shot of venom every time he turns up. William Dieterle directed; with Lizabeth Scott.
