Ben Affleck stars as the Marvel Comics superhero, blinded as a child, who's developed such extraordinary hearing that he can visualize perfectly what's in front of him (and beat the tar out of it). Comic book characters are shallow by definition, a problem that Tim Burton's Batman and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man met with offbeat casting and colorful dramatization of the heroes' back stories. This dull actioner, written and directed by Mark Steven Johnson, uses voice-over to hurry along Daredevil's genesis tale, and Affleck's rigid performance is a perpetual drag on the story. The breezily blasphemous showdown in a Catholic church proves that Johnson—the guy who reduced John Irving's A Prayer for Owen Meany to Simon Birch—hasn't lost his gift for turning wine into water. 103 min.
