Danny Gatton has spent most of his life in and around Washington, D.C., developing an underground reputation as a purveyor of fretboard mayhem the likes of which hasn't been seen since Frank Zappa's original troupe of Mothers. Armed with an arsenal of guitars and accessories (including a homemade electronic accoutrement known as the Magic Dingus Box) and blessed with astounding musical virtuosity, Gatton became known for his furious charges through rockabilly, straight-ahead Chicago blues, country breakdowns, and bone-crunching garage-band rock, often within the course of a single song. Now that he's decided to share his art with the rest of the world, he's toned things down some (I believe he leaves the Dingus Box home these days), but he'll still soar off into any of a dozen unexpected directions as his band backs him up with thunderous boogie shuffles. The amazing thing is that for all his outrageousness, Gatton burns with primal energy; even at his most outlandish, he plays straight from the gut--as honest as the rawest blues and as hungry as rock and roll. Saturday, 10 PM, Cubby Bear, 1059 W. Addison; 327-1662 or 477-7469.
