Dandana: A Celebration of Muslim Voices

When: Thu., June 16, 6:30 p.m. 2011
Hakim is considered a revolutionary of sorts, thanks to his role in modernizing shaabi—Egyptian street pop—by infusing it with dance beats. A onetime collaborator with James Brown, Hakim headlines the Music Without Borders program Dandana: A Celebration of Muslim Voices. Also on the bill: Azerbaijan’s Alim Qasimov Ensemble, who play mugham, a traditional form that combines classical poetry and complex modal improvisation.
