A self-described "laboratory," DanceWorks Chicago is all about the process. Last fall's perfectly good version of Alex Ketley's If Ever (an Ocean) Relinquished, for example, has been reset for this concert to Frank Alongi's odd, compelling soundscape, which combines tabla and seething violin. The fruit of a competition launched specifically to score this piece, it pushes the dance into raw emotional territory. An untitled work by Miguel Perez came to be because the Canadian Guitar Quartet wanted to experiment with dancers; score and movement alike cleverly allude to rather than recapitulate the tango, and the choreography is musically sensitive but never slavish. Perez's sextet appears on the first program and If Ever on the second of DanceWorks' innovative Dance Flight, which allows audience members to see either program or both in a single evening. Robert Battle's muscular Etude and delicate Takademe will also be performed, one to each program.
