Dance Chicago 2008 Opening Weekend

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 9 2008
Price: $25
Half the lineup for this festival’s opening weekend is from out of town, a choice Dance Chicago artistic director John Schmitz calls “strategic—it’s about rewarding a connection with Chicago.” A best bet among the five local troupes is plucky Lucky Plush Productions, on the cusp of its tenth anniversary and still getting better and better. Artistic director Julia Rhoads says that because she’s become obsessed with the “cultural phenomenon of sampling,” she’s been “remixing” her early works. The one on this program is Meet Them and Wonder (Again), a duet, reworked with dancer Asimina Chremos but still bizarrely feminist in the early Lucky Plush vein: it’s a cockeyed look at female rituals that opens and closes with Italian folk music for exorcisms. Buffalo-based LehrerDance, headed by former Chicagoan Jon Lehrer, presents two well-received works from last year, Loose Canon and A Ritual Dynamic, while Lehrer’s old troupe, Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, remembers its late founder, Gus Giordano, with a revival of his Wings. Other locals on the roster this weekend are DanceWorks Chicago, Concert Dance Inc., and the Mexican Dance Ensemble; the other guests are the Moscow Ballet, Ajkun Ballet Theatre, Kim Geung-soo Ballet Company, and the Houston Metropolitan Dance Company. The festival continues with a dance slam, a “fringe carnival,” kids’ shows, and other events through 11/30.
